CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
âMaddie, are you sure youâre up to this?â Holly was thrilled that Maddie had offered to go furniture shopping with her, but she worried that being on her feet all afternoon would tire her petite and very pregnant friend.
Maddie rolled her eyes as she took a dainty bite of her deli sandwich. âIâm having a baby, not recovering from major surgery, for heavenâs sake. Donât forget I was a pretty darn good athlete before I swallowed this basketball.â
Holly laughed out loud, causing several of the diners in the crowded restaurant to turn and glance their way. âI just donât want to wear you out. But Iâm so glad you came with me. Iâm hopeless at the Better Homes and Gardens stuff.â
âDonât worry about it. Iâm so bored since I stopped working full-time. Thereâs only so much baby preparation you can do, so itâll be fun to find some treasures for your house.â
Holly wrinkled her nose as she picked over the nearly tasteless plate of greens in front of her. âI think a little fun is just what the doctor ordered, at least for me.â
Maddieâs face turned serious. âHolly, this is none of my business, but I hope itâs okay to talk about it.â
Holly sighed, but of course the topic of Nate couldnât be avoided forever. âYou mean my breakup with Nate, of course.â
âHave you and he talked since the breakup? I hate to pry, I really do. But you know how much Jake and I care for you both.â
Holly pushed her salad around with her fork. She didnât have much of an appetite lately, which sucked on top of everything else. If this kept up, sheâd be moving down a dress size pretty soon. âWe havenât talked in almost a week. He called once and left a message.â
She inwardly winced, hating to admit she was such a wimp. âI didnât call back right away. I wanted to, but something made me afraid to pull the trigger. Probably because I wasnât sure what Iâd say to him if we talked. Iâm trying to get my head back on straight, and I have to admit itâs been hell.â
âBut you did call back eventually, right?â Maddie said.
âYes, but in the most cowardly wayâwhen I knew heâd likely be at a rehab session.â
When Maddie raised an eyebrow, Holly shook her head sadly. âI know, I know. Anyway, I left a message asking him if anything had changed, and saying that there was no point in calling again if it hadnât.â
Maddie gave a little snort. âI can just imagine how Nate reacted to that.â
âBadly, I assume, since he hasnât called again.â Holly still felt a little guilty about that message. âI was a little harsh, wasnât I?â
âNateâs been moping like a jilted teenager since you two split up,â Maddie said, not answering her question. âBut heâs clammed up every time Iâve tried to talk to him. Jakeâs had a little more luck. At least Nate told him he really wants to fix things between you.
